HIP HOP DRUMS
Good
crisp hip hop drums are the key to today’s hip hop production.
Every good rap producer will tell you how important the drum
sounds are when building your tracks. Whether you’re using
samples like 9th wonder or putting together a
blazing track like Timbaland, the hip hop drum sounds you use
are very important to the overall styling of your productions.
One of
the major keys to sounding like an advance hip hop producer
and not an amateur is the way you place your hip hop sounds
within your production. Too many sounds in your production
sounds cluttered and messy. Too little use of your hip hop
sounds and the production sounds too empty and dry. It’s about
finding a good balance when using sounds to build your track.
A key factor in developing your overall sound is the ability
to understand what is hot in today’s production. This is done
by listening to what is on the radio, what’s being spun by the
DJ’s in the clubs, what’s being played at the strip clubs,
what’s being played on TV video programming. You want to make
sure your hip hop and R&B production is current and up to
date.
The
major key to being current is the type of Hip Hop drum sounds
you use, the type of synth sounds you use and the way you use
your sound as far as the patterns being played. A good drum
programmer knows to layer his drum sounds. Sound layering is
vital and important to fattening up your overall sound
production. A lot of new hip hop producers will just use one
snare in their beats. They will not layer the snare with a
clap or rim shot or different sounding snare. This gives the
original snare more snap if you layer it with other snares
behind it that may be mixed a little lower or panned slightly
different than the original snare. The same thing can be said
for your kick drum sounds. You can do the same technique when
it comes to fattening up the punch of your kick drum by
layering it with two or three slightly different kick drum
sounds.
